Psychiatric emergencies are circumstances that are generally caused by illness and that require immediate expert assessment and, where appropriate, treatment. They manifest themselves in the form of changes in thinking, feeling or behaviour, perceived by the patient him/herself, family members or people in the patient’s personal environment. Examples are confusion, depressive moods, suicidal thoughts, actions that are dangerous or out of touch with reality, social withdrawal, or the like. Your GP or psychiatrist is the first person to call in an emergency situation. If you cannot reach your doctor or psychiatrist, you have the following options (24 hours):
